Mark Tennant creates dazzling daily life scenes engaging both figuration and abstraction through large brushstrokes. The artistry he uses on carefully chosen details frees him to focus on the deeper aspects of the subjects. His fugitive silhouettes enthrals viewers, inviting them to complete the scene he has set for them on the canvas. As often, what matters most is not so much what is shown but what remains undisclosed. Captivated within the instant, the painting plays sponteaneoulsy the moments before and the moments after, inviting us to virtually paint the story behind.

Tennant’s evanescent works have conquered private and public collections. The influence of academic French painting on his art shows in his characters’ modelling while there is no doubt about the era he depicts thanks to the details he represents. Tennant followed a classical training and received a B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art, in Baltimore, and an M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art, in New York City.
Tennant also was the Director of Graduate Fine Art Painting at Academy of Art University, in San Francisco. He had been an instructor there since 1998. Tennant has taught Museum Copying at the Louvre, Paris, at the Metropolitan in New York, and the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
